FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FLOWERS FOR PROM NIGHT DELIVER A MESSAGE

Galesburg, IL – The Knox County Healthy Youth Alliance and area floral establishments are teaming up this prom season to promote positive lifestyle choices.  This health promotion effort targets area teens by promoting healthy choices for their future.  When teens pick up their corsage or boutonniere for prom night, they will see messages saying “ Say No Tonight, Yes to Tomorrow,” and “Wishing You a Fun and Safe Prom Night, Think About It,” on the boxes.  These messages are an opportunity for parents and teens or teens and their peers to discuss the healthy, safe behavioral choices.

For many people, prom is one of the highlights of the high school experience. Whether you plan on staying out late, driving, wearing formal attire, or doing other activities, being responsible is key. Making smart decisions may also help lower stress while planning and enjoying the big night. Teens feel pressure from their friends to drink, do drugs, or have sex on prom night.  Substances like alcohol and drugs can play a role in teens’ engaging in sexual activity on prom night. Keeping the mind clear can help teens make choices that they are less likely to regret later.  If you or someone you know is going to the prom, here are a few tips to help make it a fun, safe, and happy experience for everyone.

Stop and Think:

  • Could this be trouble?
  • Will it break the law?
  • Will it break the school or home rules?
  • Will someone be hurt (physically or emotionally)?
  • Will I be safe?
  • Do I feel good about the situation?

“Prom can be magical, but it’s not the only time teens will have this much fun.  Don’t let anyone use prom night to pressure your teen into drinking, drugs, sex, or breaking curfew” states Erin Olson, Community Health Educator.

In 2005, teens accounted for 14.7 percent of all Knox County pregnancies, compared with 9.7 percent statewide.  The Knox County Healthy Youth Alliance is working to increase opportunities for and abilities of youth to make healthy decisions.  If you are interested in learning more about the Knox County Healthy Youth Alliance or if you have any questions, please contact Erin Olson at 309-344-3314 ext. 240.
