Water Sample Information
Coliform
Coliform bacteria are normally present in the intestinal tracts of humans and animals. They can be found in large numbers in raw sewage. If found in drinking water, they usually indicate that pollution is entering the water supply or that the well has not completely developed if it is newly drilled.
Nitrates
Nitrate is a compound of nitrogen and oxygen found in many food items and ground water. Although low levels of nitrate occur naturally in water, sometimes higher levels, which are potentially dangerous to infants, can occur. Sources of nitrates may include runoff or seepage from fertilized agricultural land, municipal waste water; feedlots, and private sewage disposal systems.
It is the standard practice if this Department to test all samples for the presence of coliform bacteria. Nitrate sampling, however is restricted to those who are pregnant or have infants under the age of 5 in their home. If you feel that you have a need to be concerned with the possibility of high nitrates in your private water well and would like to have the water tested for that purpose, please consult with a member of the Environmental Health Division.
