Body Art and Tanning


The Knox County Health Department conducts inspections of all body art establishments throughout the county in compliance with the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Body Art Code (77 Ill. Adm. Code 797). Body art facilities provide tattoo and piercing services. In order to reduce risks associated with blood borne pathogens and improper sanitation, our staff conduct assessments to assure compliance with Illinois State standards.  Body Art

If you are interested in obtaining a permit to operate either a body art or piercing facility, email the Illinois Department of Public Health at dph.bodyart@illinois.gov 

All establishments providing body art services, including tattoos or piercing are required to be registered with the Illinois Department of Public Health as stated in the Tattoo and Body Piercing Establishment Registration Act (410 ILCS 54). Tanning Facilities

The Knox County Health Department conducts inspections of all licensed tanning facilities throughout the county in compliance with the Illinois Department of Public Health as per the Tanning Facility Permit Act (210 ILCS 145). In order to reduce the risks associated with long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation, our sanitarians review operations and maintenance of each facility, as well as determine if facilities are compliant with Illinois State standards.

The Knox County Health Department conducts inspections of licensed tanning facilities in the county as stated in the Tanning Facility Code (77 Ill. Adm. Code 795).  Compliance with the Tanning Facility Code reduces the risks associated with ultraviolet radiation and ensures that facilities are sanitary and hygienic.
